Pendant près de sept siècles, une civilisation brillante et ouverte sur le monde prospère en Nubie. Les femmes y jouent un rôle de premier plan et plusieurs accèdent au pouvoir sous le titre de «candace». Lorsque l’Egypte est occupée par les Romains, en 33 avant J.-C., la candace Amanishakhéto refuse de se soumettre. Le royaume vit encore plus de 200 ans, avant de s’éteindre dans des conditions encore mal connues. L’un des obstacles à l’étude de l’histoire de la civilisation de Méroé est le déchiffrement de l’écriture méroïtique.
